Pai : The Ultimate Town To Visit in Northern Thailand

Pai is a small town in northern Thailand, noted for its lush green jungles and beautiful mountains. Despite its size, nowadays Pai thrives on tourism because of what it has to offer. It may just be a mix of small streets and small village, but hidden away in the mountains it offers a tranquil spot away from busier areas of the country.

The road between Chiang Mai and Pai offers some of the most beautiful views of the forest spread across its mountains. The road itself was constructed during World War Two by the Japanese, winding right through the heart of the jungle. The roads are steep up to Pai, but the journey is well worth it once you have arrived.

After arriving in Pai you will quickly notice that all of the streets are filled with typical Thai cultural attractions that tourists have come to love. This includes river rafting and hill trekking and also more unique experiences such as the opportunity to watch local tribeswomen weaving purses and hats in their vibrant local colors. You will also be close by to hot springs just outside of the town – the perfect relaxing day out for tourists and natives alike.

Though Pai itself is small, its variety of food is impressive. You can visit some of the local bakeries or restaurants to get a taste of the local cuisine, or spend a few hours in an internet cafe or at one of the numerous coffee shops. Some of the favourites include Thai curry which is a signature dish of the area. The culture here will really take your breath away, and there is an atmosphere here like nowhere else.

There are various places to stay in Pai, including beautiful quaint thatched roofed bungalows providing an authentic experience for any tourist. For the ultimate stay try to get accommodation by the Pai River – it is known for its mud (depending on when you visit) but it is loved nonetheless. There is a bustling community here of locals as well as backpackers and travellers sharing their stories whilst watching the river go by. The ambience really is unbeatable.

But Pai isn’t just for those who want to relax on holiday, there are plenty of opportunities for thrill-seekers to get their kicks. For example, you might like to try kayaking down the Pai River, which is always full of surprises. This is a fast flowing river but can prove to be an experience in a lifetime so don’t miss your opportunity while it’s there. Not only this, but it will really let you appreciate the scenery from a different view – watching the mountains and bamboo huts pass by as you make your journey.

As you can see, Pai is a town that has something on offer for everybody. Its location means that it is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of more popular tourist resorts, whilst there is still a whole host of activities to keep you busy.
